doctors say shocking new numbers of millennials are diagnosed with colon cancer. now they're sounding the alarm. and families devastated by the disease are speaking with cbs2's aaron kennedy. i was 30 at the time. he was 31.
and we had a 10-month-old and a 3-year-old. reporter: that's when cathryn gainy and her husband, jim, found out he had stage four colon cancer. the diagnosis took months because he was so young. he returned to the doctor
and was told, oh, you have a very intensive job at times and a new baby at home. reporter: someone born in 1990 has double the risk of rectal and colon cancer as someone born in 1950. they haven't determined a cause, but many point to lack
of exercise, obesity, and poor diet. reporter: screening begins at 50. but bridget gainy mullin started getting screenings younger. they were able to take them out.
and i thank god for my brother. we have to consider lowering the initial screening age. reporter: more younger patients have been treated, including this 35-year-old. his diagnosis came a year after symptoms came. you're over 35.
so you need more fiber in your many attribute the symptoms to everyday stress. i think many don't take it seriously as they should. reporter: after surgery, chemo, and radiation, jamie is almost 3 years in remission. cathryn gainy renewed her vow
after he passed. i hope it's a reminder to our sons that we never lose our love for each other. reporter: now she's keeping his memory alive so other young people will recognize this new risk. if we can't change our
story, we'd rather try to reach out and maybe change it for somebody else. reporter: erin kennedy, cbs2 news. right now, screenings are recommended for adults over age 50 and younger adults with certain genetic syndromes or
genetic histories. if you're under 50, insurance may or may not cover the tests. all tests carry some risks, we're told. very serious and for people who think they need to wait until 50 -- right!
