hello, i am dr. maureen hewitt, a medical oncologist at the abramson cancer center at chester county hospital. in my role, i treat many people with colon cancer, some that may have been prevented if they had undergone proper screening for this disease. i want to share some information with you about colon cancer and lifesaving screenings. colon cancer is one of the
most commonly diagnosed cancers in the united states and there is a ninety percent chance it can be cured if caught early. unfortunately about one in three adults between 50 and 75 years old are not getting tested as recommended. getting screened for colon cancer can detect the disease at an early stage when treatment is most likely to be
successful but perhaps more importantly, screening can also prevent colon cancer by identifying and removing precancerous polyps in the colon before they develop into cancer. while there are several screening methods available a colonoscopy remains the best test to screen for colon cancer and is the only screening tool that allows for the
removal of precancerous polyps. the us preventive services task force and several other agencies have issued guidelines for colon cancer screening. in general a screening colonoscopy is recommended at the age of 50 for average risk patients. subsequent follow-up is determined based on the findings during the procedure, a screening colonoscopy
may be recommended before the age of 50 if there is a family history of colon cancer if you have inflammatory bowel disease or if you develop concerning symptoms such as gastrointestinal bleeding or changes in bowel habits. there are many things you can do to protect the health of your colon. eating a balanced diet with fruits vegetables
and whole grains, avoiding tobacco use and excess alcohol as well as exercising regularly may decrease the risk of developing colon cancer. incorporating these positive changes in your daily life will have benefits beyond the health of your colon. to learn more or schedule your colonoscopy, visit chestercountyhospital.org
